ASMAA announces that they have partnered with the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal (PPT). This mini-tribunal hearing in Portugal can be used to support a coalition of human rights lawyers and academics which were granted the opportunity to put fracking on trial at hearings to be conducted in October 2017 by the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal (PPT) in the UK and the USA.

The Immediate Suspension of Oil and Gas Exploration in the Algarve Offshore

The Algarve Blocks 13 (Lagosta) and 14 (Lagostim) in the Algarve Basin is a concession situated 8.5 km from Faro Island and 15 km from Faro town, and which according to António Costa Silva, CEO of Partex Oil and Gás during an interview with the Expresso Newspaper on the 25 de Setembro 2010, has gas reserves that are 20 times bigger than the reserves found in the Poseidon North and South gas fields in neigbouring Spain.

ASMAA launched the campaign "Oilgarve" in 2012 against the oil and gas exploration in Algarve. Initially the focus was on the proposed oil and gas exploration off the Algarve South coast - in the Algarve Basin - in the deep offshore.

Vast quantities of gas and oil resources are in the process of being discovered under Portuguese waters. The government and executives of oil and gas companies, which includes such names as Repsol, Galp and Partex (an offshore company owned by the Portuguese Gulbenkian Foundation) have been telling us how great this will be for the country. But will it?
