Website Content: Are you getting what you are paying for?

Nowadays we hear a lot of complaints about businesses not making enough money in the Algarve – blame is on austerity measures, the crisis, government, competition – you name it, its always something else or someone else’s fault.

When in fact the major obstacle to most businesses prosperity is nothing more than lack of, or poor advertising and marketing campaigns both online and offline.

Today we going to talk about online content, why is it important, what is the going rate, etc.

There is no doubt that with the progress of the Internet as the new marketing and sales platform, good online content is a must. It has become imperative that businesses develop new marketing and sales strategies for their online presence if they want to succeed.

Over the past two years, we’ve conducted extensive research into the online presence of probably 80% of the local businesses in the Algarve and evaluated the content of their sites. What we’ve identified horrified us – the norm is very poor content quality, stale websites, old websites that have not been updated for ages, you name it … we’ve seen it.

Many of our members have shown a keen interest in the content of our websites, our message gets read, our message gets shared online, we get many links to our websites, and we are having impact as an association. Why? Because we invest heavily in our content!

But so can you!

Before we get down to it, you need to understand that Google looks at the content of your site for their ratings. A good site should have at least 200 articles, updates at least once a week, and new content added regularly.

Now that we've got that out of the way ...

We decided to write a post about how much professional web content writing really costs and what you need to budget for if you want your online business to grow. This pricing guide applies to 2014, and will tell you how much it costs to outsource landing pages, articles, blog posts and other web content in general.

We did quite a bit of research, so that you won't have to! There are many different types of web content writing, each with different price points. And most of web content writing services involve one of the following:

  1. Website landing pages for businesses – Involves writing content that should have distinct calls to action, include the SEO keywords you're trying to target and be somewhere in the range of 250-450 words long (depending on the design of the site).

The purpose of landing pages is to convert browsers to buyers, and having amazing content can make a huge difference in your conversion rates. Poorly written content can seriously affect your sales. Landing pages are the most difficult to write out of all the web content, which is why they're so expensive.

  2. SEO blog posts — SEO blog posts (also known as SEO articles) are one of the easiest ways to increase your website traffic. They drive SEO, fuel social media marketing campaigns and are a good way to introduce people to your brand. Blogs give people a reason to visit your website, and once readers are there they tend to click around a little. In a directly indirect way, blogs drive sales.

  3. Link-bait articles — these are like standard SEO blog posts, only twice the length and hyped up on great content topics. Designed to go viral, link-bait articles tend to be provocative in one way or another. There's a huge amount of effort and talent involved in writing link-bait articles, but the traffic payoff is often worth the per-word rate.

So, how much does all this web content writing cost?

It's hard to say, because most companies that provide a good content writing service don't advertise their prices. But we are going to give you an idea of what you can expect to pay for good content.

Keeping in mind that landing pages content is where you want to drop your money, since it acts as your website's silent salesman. If your web content is coming off like a sweaty and desperate insurance salesman, it's not going to convert and your sales are going to suffer.

Who cares if you're getting a ton of traffic if none of it is converting into actual sales?
With that said, how much money should you expect to throw at your website copy?

This is one instance where it's difficult to tell what companies really charge for landing pages content. For example, we are lucky in that we have a great web team in ASMAA. We have developers that only develop and design our websites, and we have specialist writers that write our own content. You can't have a one-shoe fits all approach to the online world. You need specialists to take care of each section of your online business.

Nonetheless, the fact remains, in that in the Algarve many web design businesses roll the cost of the content writing into their design and development fees, and then scratch together the content themselves. This is why so many websites have such poor landing pages copy and why you can get websites developed with content thrown in for anything between 500 and 1,500 Euros in the Algarve.

We've heard people say, I have a website and I got it cheap. What they forget to tell you or they themselves do not know, is that they website online is in fact totally worthless because it does not promote their business in a clear professional manner.

During our research we also found that most professional landing pages writers quote between a 1,000 and 25,000 Euros per page of content.

I can just hear you grasping and saying – bullocks – I’m not paying that!

Our take: If you are serious about having a professional website with good content that converts and makes money, you'd be looking at anything between 500 and 5,000 + euros per website article. Keep in mind that to do it right, it requires a huge amount of time involved in creating the successful landing pages.

Writing good content, is not a five minute job, it can take hours and even many days before a good article is ready for publication on your site. It requires extensive research, it requires ability to understand your business, your target market and the message that you want to impart. It also requires researching what your competitors are doing. At the end of the day its all time consuming.

Ask yourself, how long it would take you to write good copy. How long would it take you away from your “paying work? What would be the cost to your business if you do everything yourself? Would you pay yourself 10 or 20 euros for a weeks work? (that's how long some articles take to write)

Having said all of the above, there is indeed a safe way to deal with costs. Pay by the word for all of your pages content: - for example the typical rate of 1 Euro per word and with a project cost cap. Keep in mind that costs depend on the complexity of the subject matter and the research involved and the lenght of our article.

Many website pages are usually around 250-500 words and most businesses need at least five pages of content written, which means that the typical 5-7 page "website content project" costs on average between 1,500 and 2,000 euros, including all edits.  (this does not include website design, nor development, databases, CRM, ERP, photos, article layour, etc)

How much should you pay for SEO blogs?

SEO blogs should cost you between 100 and 500 Euros for each article, if all the work includes the uploading to your site by your content writer. (Keep in mind that you need to have then the right CMS - content management system already set-up)

But if you want a 1,000/2,000-word in-depth article that features interviews, references, etc - then you have to expect to pay more.

How much should you pay for link-bait articles?

Link-bait articles take much more time and talent to write than a standard blog or even a standard web page article. The whole point of writing link-bait articles is to get as many sites to link back to you as possible, which boils down to getting more site traffic.

Link-bait takes a lot of time to write, and even more time to edit — but it won't cost you as much as a new BMW. In the industry the going rate in Europe is between 500 and 2,000 euros each.

Can you expect a guarantee that each one of your costly articles will get you hundreds of back-links? No…and you shoudn’t expect it neither.

Conclusion

The facts are that there are all kinds of BS prices listed online for content writing. You can find somebody from India or China on Craigslist to write you content for less than $10, the fact is that in all probability the content is crap and the chances are that it has been sold to thousands of other users. Remember if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

The question you have to ask is … how long do you intend to stay in business in this new business paradigm?

Remember, website content can be fairly tricky to write and format in a way that resonates with both readers and search engines. Chances are, that if you're reading this right now it's because you found us via a search engine or via social media – this wasn't by accident on our part, it was by hard work.

Also keep in mind that content writing is not layout of your article on your site nor does it include any photos or graphics with it.

We are sharing with you, why our website works for us, and why we receive thousands of daily visitors in organic search traffic alone. Its because our website is full of great content.

Our website is one of the highest producing employees that the association has, and that's how it should be! - Your own website should also be your best employee.
