ASMAA's Charity Shop is Portimão is now open. Located in the old part of Portimão, in proximity to Portimão Bombeiros, Pingo Doce and SEF, and many other landmarks of the old town of Portimão. This stylish charity shop, is a jewel hidden away in one of its side streets.

ASMAA, the association behind this shop, is best known for spearheading the fight against oil and gas exploration in the Algarve since 2012, and for providing assistance to fire victims in the north of Portugal since last year.

In December 2017, ASMAA management took the plunge and took possession of this 500m2 venue, spread over two levels as a tool to help fund their anti-oil campaigns and their social upliftment projects, and thereby lessening the dependency on ad-hoc money donations. Their fiercely maintained independent status, means that they will not receive funding from big businesses or from government, and so they need to create a self-sustainability program.

Phase I of this store has now been completed with the opening of the ground floor display areas, and phase II (the cave), is scheduled to be open to the public sometime late in March this year.

The ground floor now boast a fabulous collection of clothes, shoes and bags which will be sold at really affordable prices, along with household goodies such as furniture, white goods, décor items and paintings, many painted by local as well as international renown artists.

ASMAA decided to take a larger unit than we had originally planed because we wanted a venue where we could integrate a ‘community hub’ alongside the shop. We know that this represents a new direction in charity retailing.

ASMAA’s CEO, Laurinda Seabra explains, “We aim to have a bigger presence in the Algarve, we wanted a place where local people can have access to more of our services, as well as a great range of affordable fashion and household goods which are sold for good causes.

We are working on plans for the hub so that we can offer the Algarve a place that delivers real benefit to the local community. With this is mind; we have now integrated a social division, which will focus on providing support programs for children, women, as well as families in need.  The social division will be under the stewardship of Bernadette Abbott, a seasoned and passionate social worker and social work manager, with decades of experience.

“Although we are open everyday from Monday to Friday, from 11h30 to 16h00, and Saturdays from 11h00 to 14h00 in winter, we would specifically like to invite people to our open days in February 2018, which will be held each Friday from 11h30 to 16h00 at the shop.

The open days are special days in which we want not only to welcome whoever is interested in knowing more about what we do, and what we stand for, but will also serve to highlight the exciting volunteering opportunities that will become available as we progress.

Members of our management team will be there to chat about the services we provide and those that we intend providing in the future to our community. It’s a long-term project and a continuous work in progress. Constantly adapting to the arising needs”.

As part of our endeavour to keep the shop always well stocked, we welcome donations of clothes, furniture, bric-a-brack or anything you would like to donate, as the shop is a multi-commodity store with many fast-moving lines.

Seabra went on to state: “All items in the shop have been donated to ASMAA and the proceeds generated from sales are reinvested back into meeting ASMAA’s environmental and social purposes, as well as its objectives. Other donated items are given free of charge to deserving beneficiaries. Donated items can be donor restricted for social purposes only.”

This is the correct map to our shop.

Google map is WRONG as it is showing the street as it used to be before section next to Pingo Doce car park being closed. You can't drive through anymore.

Here's a quick scematic and directions ...

Option 1 (green line): If you park your car at Pingo Doce car open parking area - please park away from street and closer to the entrance of the covered Pingo Doce parking garage. Then from there is a very short walk from car park (keeping undercover parking garage on your right end side), then it is just a few metres of walk on (sand/gravel area till you reach the tarmac street, keep on straight and you will see our building (Blue building in photo) on your right end side about 150 metres walk.

Option 2 (red line): If you driving to the shop street area. Coming from trafic lights where you have the cemitery on your right, but before Bombeiros building. Turn right at that street light (Rua dos Bombeiros Voluntários that becomes Rua de Olivença), turn left into first road that you can turn left. (Travessa Alexandro Herculano), drive till the end of street and then turn right. (Be careful coming out of that street).

You will see our shop in the right end side (Blue building).

If you have trouble finding a parking space, just double park. Currently we are in negotiations with Portimão council to ensure that there are more parking bays open (as one single resident that is operating a business from an apartment has taken "ownership of about 10 parking bays" which is creating a parking problem for everyone else, including us). We hope to have this situation resolved soon.
