How to Help the Central Portugal Fire Victims

At ASMAA we mobilised together with Families in Need Network and the Fire Alert (Algarve/Alentejo) association to deliver some of the donated goods to fire victims in Oliveira do Hospital, Tábua, etc. on the 27 and 28 October.

Another trip will take place early in November with the assistance of Steve from UK Transport company “Skeen Movers” that kindly offered us 90m3 in his vehicle.

Travelling Costs Fund Raiser

We appeal that you assist us with money donations to cover such expenses as travelling; fuel,  tolls and food for our 7 volunteers this weekend as we deliver the first batch of donated items and conduct a recon on the ground.

We will be doing over 1200Km return trip with 3 vehicles this weekend (We will probably do more than 4,000 Km in total).

But we not the only ones assisting.

General across the board info: We suggest that if you want to help with donations of all types that you join the Facebook group “REDE PRONTA  -  INFORMAÇÃO E INTERAJUDA” and GAURDIÂES DA TERRABoth groups are active and maintained up to date with latest information by a group of very hard working volunteers.

ASMAA, “Network for Families in Need” and “Alerta de incêndio florestal/forest fire alert (algarve and lower alentejo)” are actively helping gathering items across the Algarve as are many other kind souls. And we are thankful that we have our (ASMAA’s) warehouse in Barão de São João, and count with the assistance of “Direct Transport” warehouse in Parchal (Lagoa) as drop off zones.

In Alentejo our colleague and ASMAA director Manuela Gonzaga is also organising collections and destribution. You can get in touch with her, she’ll keep you also up to date.

Furniture and Clothes Donations

Right now many of the houses has burned down, we will assess the situation on the ground and give some indications of what is really needed. If they do not have a roof over their heads furniture is not going to assist.

We've now been informed that clothes that were in a warehouse donated for Pedrogão has now been made available. Again we will evaluate what is the real situation and give you some feedback. What is really needed are warm jackets, warm working clothes, working shoes and boots, etc.

Blankets, warm bed sheets and bath towels are goods that are really needed, as are kitchen goodies such as cleaning towers, table clothes, etc.

Fire Victims Money Donations

Regarding “Money Donations” we urge you to donate but be please be cautious, as funds donated for the Pedrogão Fires for example and many of the donated goods has not reached many of these in real need yet – more than 4 months after that other devastating fire. We are weary that the same can happen this time.

Donate via groups on the grounds that are in direct contact with people in the region. We will be able to give you more advise on which NGOs and Fund Raising initiatives you can trust once we return. You can also check on the Facebook page links above in this article.

ASMAA has been asked to channel funds to needed families and individuals in these regions, we have declined as we do not have the proper infrastructure to get these funds to the families or the individuals, nor are we in the ground full time. But we will continue to gather goods in the Algarve and Alentejo and get them transported up north as long as it is needed and we can do it.
