ASMAA to contest in court APA ‘s decision to give green light for ENI to drill

ASMAA announced today that they are contesting in court the decision taken by the Portuguese government to allow the drilling by ENI to proceed without an environmental impact assessment.

The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) made public on 16 May, their decision that an EIA will not be required for the first exploration drilling by ENI in the Alentejo Basin, in spite of extensive written oppositions submitted during the Public Consultation.

APA’s decision does not surprise us at ASMAA, as it follows the very same pattern shown by the Portuguese government when ASMAA’s petition and 46,000 people objected in response to the previous public consultation were summarily ignored.

On 6 April this year ASMAA lodged our main case in the Loulé Administrative and Fiscal Supreme Court, which is now running its course with outcome not expected for at least another 12 to 18 months. In the meantime, the Prime Minister yesterday, once again reinforced the decision by government to allow the drilling to go ahead in response to objections raised by the Green party during a parliement session.

A luta continua! Nem UM Furo! Nem Agora ... Nem NO Futuro!
