Help ASMAA set up its first charity shop in the Algarve

ASMAA is planning on openning its first charity shop in the Algarve in the first quarter of 2017, to be located in the Lagos town. The shop will be a mix between a traditional charity shop and an Up-cycle shop. It is expected to be a meeting venue for patrons as well as an information hub.

Background

ASMAA was created in 2012 with the intent of protecting the established industries in the Algarve – tourism, fishing and agriculture, as well as its nature and environment with a special focus on ocean and marine ecosystems.

Since then we have been involved in many activism actions, with the principal one being the protection of our ocean and land from oil and gas exploration, including fighting the threat of fracking.

To date the founders carried most of the cost of running the association and its various campaigns, with support from a few private individual donors that have over the past 3 years donated, some on a regular basis, others on a once-off donation – which we are extremely grateful for, because without their support we would not have been able to achieve what we’ve managed to achieve.

But the time has come, when we need to increase our financial resources if we are to have the necessary funds to cover more ambitious campaigns in the fight against the threat of oil and gas exploration, as well as planned future legal action which we know will be necessary.

The Idea of the ASMAA Up-Cycling & Charity Hub was born

The idea of setting up a Charity Shop as an “Up-Cycle Hub”emerged from a budget-planning meeting when we were horizon scanning and feeling very gloomy about the future economic climate.  We identified and agreed we needed to develop our commercial activities to bring in our own income, and that would help us continue to run the core services we provide in the Algarve.

Our first challenge was to decide where the Charity Shop should be and what should it focus on. Should we operate in the Lagos area, or in another town?  What products and services should we focus on?

Upon reflection the answer was rather obvious!

The area, it made sense to remain in Lagos. After all that is where our offices are located, but we needed to find a shop that would have sufficient floor space area, and was located in a good area and at a reasonable rent. We’ve now identified the right premises to rent.

Regarding what should we “sell” in the shop, the answers were also obvious.

We should have a section for our own marketing collateral, another area for traditional products such as second hand books, clothes, furniture, etc, and another area where we can display and sell products made by some of the local artisans – thus helping the Algarve with job creation/retention and economic sustainability. The focus of the shop also includes an “Up-Cycling” division, where materials that could land in landfills will be recycled into new products and sold. In addition we plan to have a section where we can have a small gathering place for the patrons of the shop, as well as our fellow activists in the form of a little coffee shop.

The Challenges

The next challenge that we are facing, is to raise the money needed to pay for the initial rental of the shop and its refurbishment, and then to gather sufficient stock to fill the shop.

Forecast opening date

We hope to be in a position to open the shop in February 2017.
