Also on August 14, 2018, ASMAA challenged in the TAF of Loulé the decision of the National Entidade Mercados Combustíveis (ENMC) of January 9, as well as the opinion of the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) of May 16, 2018 regarding the lack of requirement for an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to be conducted by the ENI / Galp consortium.
Lawyers for the Government and ENI / GALP seek to annul the class action by invoking the illegitimacy of the association to represent thousands of people opposing oil drilling. As a result the court issued a ruling, whereby citizens and organizations are invited to communicate in writing that they support of ASMAA’s class action to the court. ASMAA now needs your support, in order to ensure that the class action will proceed and be judged, and not overturned solely on the basis of administrative tricks by the opposing legal team.
In spite of what is being argued by the opposing parties, we lodged the class action with the legitimacy we have to represent the tens of thousands of people who opposed and continue to oppose the deep offshore drilling off the coast of Aljezur.
An advertisement was published in the newspaper O Público (page 40) on Friday 21 September 2018, on instructions from the Administrative and Fiscal court of Loulé, giving notice to all interested parties to state, within 10 days of its publication, their wish and willingness to be represented by ASMAA in this class action.
ASMAA has published a draft letter that you can use to express your wishes to be represented in the class action by ASMAA - so long as you are a citizen of an European Union member state. This letter must be filled in, signed and posted and/or emailed to the court. Please email a copy to ASMAA as well.
At a time when the opposition to oil drilling is intensifying, with the acceptance of a precautionary measure by the Loulé TAF, the exposure of numerous conflicts of interest between the state and the private sector is becoming blatantly clear. We can all clearly see the pressure exerted by the government to decide against the will of the people of Algarve and Alentejo. As a result, it is important to reinforce the necessity for people to become actively involved through the official representation mandate to ASMAA.
The voice of citizens, municipalities and organizations must be heard!
Herewith guidelines on how to ensure that ASMAA can, legally and with the full support of the Portuguese legal system, be the VOICE of us all in this matter.

Any Portuguese citizen, as well as any citizen of an European Union member country, associations, foundations and local authorities.
