ASMAA has announced today that they are actively accessing the legal options open to them to bring this matter to the attention of the courts, because it is clear that all actions to date by authorities and government representatives have not resulted in any substantive or effective conclusion, nor addressed the risks nor fears of the local population.

ASMAA announced today that they are embarking on a major fundraiser to ensure that petition forms supported by information flyers land on every single home in the Algarve.

On 21 and 22 April the local population was faced with another very worrying sight in the Perdigão area of Aljezur, in the site where the activity of where the alleged “water drilling” activity is taking place.

According to a letter sent to at least one mayor in the Algarve, which we received a copy of via email, it appears that Mr. Sousa Cintra from Portfuel Petroleo e Gas de Portugal, Lda - is not very pleased with the awareness raising campaigns run by local activists across the Algarve, and wants to see it stopped.

On the 1 December 2015, it was brought to our attention by local residents that a drilling site had been established in an area outside Rogil in the Aljezur council area. According to some local residents operation had started on 15 November 2015.

In London, on March 15, 2016, the consortium Galp/ENI announced that it is their intention to drill the first deep offshore exploratory well in the Alentejo basin this summer. It is planed to take place at approximately 80 Km from Sines, and could be between Odeceixe and Amado beaches in the Aljezur council region.

It was heart warming to see the support from a group of ocean lovers and protectors. We thank you on behalf of all the residents in the Algarve, as well as all the mayors that have stood as one voice against this major threat to our oceans.

Two offshore wells are due to be drilled this year (2016) in our coasts, and on land its still too early to know when it will start. Nonetheless ... we continue with the opinion that One Well is ONE Well too many ... be it at sea or on land.

I attended the “debate” meeting called by tourism of Algarve yesterday in Sagres - 17 October 2014. It was deeply disappointing. A meeting that was promoted as being an open dialogue, was anything but; a meeting where the organisers had been pre-informed that I would be attending if questions could be asked of the key people that would be present namely, Secretary of State for Culture, Secretary of State for Tourism, President of the Algarve Tourism Board, etc.

Delivered by Sergio Brandao.  Sergio is an experienced trainer, surfing instructor, competition surf coach and surf school owner.
