COVID – 19PAYMENT OF IRC AND AVT TO BE POSTPONED
The Prime Minister announced on 20 March 2020 that the payment of VAT and IRC was postponed to the 2nd semester of the year, which would have to be paid in the coming months, to guarantee the activity of companies and jobs.
The announcement was made by António Costa after a meeting of the Council of Ministers to approve a set of social and economic support measures for the population affected by the covid-19 pandemic.
António Costa said today that Portugal is experiencing not only a “moment of health emergency”, but also a “moment of economic emergency” with the Covid-19 pandemic.
After the Council of Ministers, which took economic measures to minimize the impact of the moment on the affected populations, Costa defended that “it is necessary to preserve employment, ensure the income of families and that companies do not close their doors”.
“This will certainly be a very tough quarter for all of us,” he stressed at a press conference at Palácio da Ajuda, in Lisbon.
The Prime Minister said, this Friday, that Portugal is experiencing a “health and economic emergency” and that “it is essential to protect the employment and income of families”.
In a statement to journalists, António Costa said that this is “a moment of emergency”. “It is a matter of dealing with the life of the Portuguese. It is also a time of economic emergency. It will be a very hard quarter for everyone. In June we will be able to assess the damage suffered and envision a new future for our economy,” said the Prime Minister.
“For that, it is necessary to protect employment. It is absolutely essential to ensure liquidity for companies, so that they guarantee jobs,” added Costa. “Right now we have to focus on saving lives, on health, and business, on the economy”.
“We approve accessible credit on condition of job maintenance, ” said the prime minister, adding measures such as “suspending the expiry of lease contracts that would expire in the coming months” and “automatically extending unemployment benefits”.
“It is necessary to reassure families and businesses. There is a clear priority at this moment: stop uncertainty and restore confidence. In order to have a new future, we need to arrive in June in conditions to be able to face with confidence and prepare for the relaunch of our economy. The household income cannot be more fragile. The state is also to say this,” the most effective measure to support families is to ensure employment. ”
