Info about the Jack Up oil rig seen off Algarve Coast

Since Friday last week that we have been inundated with calls, messages, emails and Facebook contacts about an offshore oil exploration platform that is anchored just off Lagos/Portimao coastal area.

The platform is being towed by the Panamanian registered Offshore Supply Ship "Sparfell" and is on the way to Vlissengen in the Netherlands. We believe it may have been commissioned to go into operation in the North Sea.

Yes, it is currently anchored in Portuguese waters, it is clearly seen from Lagos, Portimão, Alvor and Sagres, but our own guess is that its anchored so as to avoid the North Atlantic weather and rough seas, rather than as many expressing their concern that deep offshore drilling operations attempts are restarting in the Algarve.

To put your mind at rest, before any offshore drilling operations in Algarve can take place in the future, a few things has to happen. Starting with new tenders, signed contracts and TUPEM applications. So far there’s no indications, that any of these steps have been put into operation by the Portuguese government.

So you can all relax for now, while we at ASMAA continue to struggle every day, with the situation that we find ourselves currently in. I.e. Without the necessary funds to just settle our outstanding legal costs and the outstanding costs of campaigning, that led to all contracts for oil & gas exploration in Algarve being stopped late last year. The reality is that we still owe thousands of Euros to various service providers.

But keep in mind, that once the threat of oil & gas exploration rears its head again in the future (because its just a question of time), until we settle ALL our current debts, we may not be in a position to do anything to stop it.

If you want to assist in paying outstanding legal and campaign costs that successfully STOPPED all drilling in Algarve, both onshore (fracking) and deep offshore PLEASE DONATE NOW!

The simplest form is to make your donation online using your Paypal account, or your credit or debit card. We are thankfull for whatever amount you donate, be it 50€, 100€, 250€, 500€ ... or any other amount that you feel is justified and you can afford to part with.

We protest also against the final approach over the old town of Albufeira!
Pleas, help us!
Thank you :-)

Dear NAV and ANAC!
It is absolutely irresponsible what you do!
You contaminate our wonderful old town. You steer planes very precisely on the 500 square meters of the historic center of Albufeira.
Many older Portuguese live here. The coronavirus and kerosene are bad for lung patients and the elderly!
Nevertheless, one plane after another flies here. Change the flight route immediately! Everywhere fewer people live on the coast than here in the Peneco district and in the Rossio!
Protect our valuable old town and the residents in the old town center!
Greetings from the residents in the historic center of Albufeira
