In London, on March 15, 2016, the consortium Galp/ENI announced that it is their intention to drill the first deep offshore exploratory well in the Alentejo basin this summer. It is planed to take place at approximately 80 Km from Sines, and could be between Odeceixe and Amado beaches in the Aljezur council region.
When a drilling project has been approved, site surveys should always be performed to minimise the risk of harm to personnel and equipment, and to protect the natural environment, although many oil and gas companies do not do so. Looking at the industry own reports on hazards, one get's a good perspecive of what hazards will be faced.

Decommissioning of onshore facilities usually includes the complete removal of permanent facilities and well abandonment, including associated equipment, material, and waste disposal or recycling. Specific additional requirements to be considered for oil and gas facilities include well abandonment and pipeline decommissioning options.
